Code of Ethics – Standard C.2.g (Impairment)

Summary:
Counselors are responsible for monitoring their own physical, mental, and emotional well-being to ensure they are able to provide competent services. When counselors become impaired (e.g., due to stress, burnout, illness, or personal issues), they must take appropriate steps to protect clients from harm.

Key Expectations:

  • Continuously self-assess for signs of impairment.
  • Seek supervision, consultation, or personal counseling when needed.
  • Limit, suspend, or terminate practice if impairment interferes with effectiveness.
  • Take action to ensure client welfare remains the priority.

Application for CIT (brief insight):
As a counselor-in-training, this standard emphasizes the importance of psychological fitness, self-awareness, and proactive self-care. It reinforces the need to seek supervision when overwhelmed and to maintain readiness so that client care is not compromised.

 

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Common Core Area Standards include eight foundational areas for counselor training:

  1. Professional Orientation & Ethics – Roles, identity, and the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics
  2. Social & Cultural Diversity – Multicultural competence and advocacy
  3. Human Growth & Development – Lifespan development and influences
  4. Career Development – Career theories and planning
  5. Counseling & Helping Relationships – Theories, skills, and interventions
  6. Group Counseling & Work – Group dynamics and leadership
  7. Assessment & Testing – Tools, validity, and ethical use
  8. Research & Program Evaluation – Research methods and outcome evaluation

Psychological Fitness

It is imperative that counselors in training (CIT’s) maintain holistic wellness across multiple domains of their mental, relational, and professional lives. One of my activities that promotes well-being, openness, self-awareness, and self-acceptance is Yoga. Yoga is so helpful in keeping me grounded.  It helps me improve my focus and calm my thoughts. Maintaining physical fitness is key to maximizing my energy and effectiveness.  Socializing with my group of friends in my quilting class and my weekly fellowship with friends from church brings balance to my life.  I also attend individual therapy to maintain a positive outlook, reinforce healthy boundaries, and keep things in perspective. Psychological fitness is the most important factor in effective therapeutic practice and a successful counseling career.
